A Fruitful Time

If you were to ask me what I was growing this year, the answer would be ratatouille. The onions and garlic are already in. The onions were OK, but the garlic was easily the best I have ever grown. Also good are the aubergine and peppers in the greenhouse, (eggplant and capsicums if in the US), the beefsteak tomatoes are cropping heavily, as are the courgette, (zucchini) in the garden. Put them all together and you get ratatouille. I add some smoked bacon for extra flavour. And do not serve undercooked. This is hearty peasant food, not nouvelle cuisine.

Oh, and aubergine is melanzana in Italian and brinjal in Hindi. I didn’t know what one was until I was nearly thirty.

There are some little figs developing well, but the grapes are small and late. It has not been a good summer for the Mediterranean plants. Last year we had a few small olives, but not so this year. There are plenty of apples an the trees and the damsons look good.
